Boxer Pitbull Terrier – Rocky

Pitbull Boxer Mix

I do some fostering for an animal rescue (Wags & Whiskers Minneapolis Animal Rescue), which deals with a lot of “bully” breeds, animals that are percieved as bad dogs because of their reputation based on their breed. Which Pitbulls are on the top of the list labeled as an aggressive”, “vicious” dogs, or any other assumption people can come up with. It’s pretty sad that people talk about things they know nothing about and how lies become truth.

I took in Rocky as a foster dog last February, and loved him to death and decided to keep and adopt him. Not to sure about the history of Rocky, but from what I remember he was originally brought up from a shelter in Missouri and close to being euthanized. Probably for nothing more than to create space since there are so many pitbulls that end up in Animal Shelters.

Rocky is an American Pitbull Boxer Mix. not 100% positive, but that’s what I was told and looking at him I can see both, from the coat of his fur and the look of him.

I remember when I first got him, his ribs were showing and he just looked like he has been through a lot. Mostly the reason I decided to keep him was for his demeanor and intelligence. Also, he has this awesome howl when he is excited, and I still to this day have not heard another dog do it like that, he definitely is a great dog all around.

His intelligence is surprising to me. I was able to teach him how to shake with both hands in about 20 mins, and he has been able to do it ever since. He still has a lot of puppy tendencies as he is only at the moment about 17 months old, but great dog none the less.

Rocky is constantly a great playmate for any other foster dog I bring in to the house, he is never shown any aggression since i have had him towards people or other dogs, but he will play around when can. He also is great with Children, my son, who is 10 years old loves his dog to death, sleeps in the same together, and they get along great. My nephews, one is 12 and the other is 5, and they get along with him really well. Never any fear of attacks or aggression whatsoever.

Now with all that said, any dog, whether it’s a pitbull or a shitzu, needs to have a good owner to train him or her properly. All the stories of attacks and vicious behavior lies solely on the owner of the dog. If you do not train your dog properly to be around people, other dogs, or just plain train them to their environment, they will have bad behavioral tendencies and that’s where they run into problems. Just like a child with no discipline or direction, pitty’s are very similar, they thrive off of learning, training, discipline and structure.

I have been around a lot of pitbulls and pitbull mixes, and they are by far my favorite type of dog, their loyalty to their owner is amazing to see, and probably the main reason they are used so much for dog fighting unfortunately. Pitbulls will never give up and to always try to please their owner, and they definitely get exposed by these idiots that use them for personal gain and for game. It’s really sad actually, pitbulls use to be well-respected dogs, they were used in both World Wars in posters and other duties, as well as in movies and shows such as Little Rascals, and now are only known for the bad things you here from whispers and people who don’t what they are really talking about.

Here’s a good site for quick interesting facts about pitbulls. http://www.pitbulllovers.com/pit-bulls-ten-things-you-should-know.html

Anyways, just wanted to share my passion for the pitty, and all misrepresnted dogs :)

Thank you.

  2. I’m worried that the Pit bull wants a exclusive kind of operator…these dogs, regardless of how ‘trusting’ nevertheless have teeth, are nevertheless animals without having moral principles and when they DO bite, won’t let go. As in all creatures…some often be a lot more suseptable to instinctual habits and time and time once again, this breed tends to try and do just that.

    • I wouldn’t single out “these” dogs, as all dogs have potential to bite, as do all drivers have potential to be dangerous on the road, as do all people have the potential to kill. I believe that all dogs have different personality types, and not a specific stereo type to a breed of dog, but the dog as an individual. I think you have to be aware of what your dog (no matter a pitbull or toy poodle) is capable of, and be a resonsible person, you will be fine, yes even with “these” kinds of dogs as you put it. I don’t mind your opinion though, but i know how “my” particular dogs are and what they are capable of. All dogs to me equate that of a 2 year old child, you wouldn’t let your 2 year child run free and do what they want right? Then the same goes for your dog and any other animal that you keep as a pet. As long as the owners are aware and responsible there is no reason to single out a particular dog based on stereo types. I am not going to get into a debate about why Pitbulls are misjudged and blah blah, I think that doesn’t really help. Thanks for the comment though :)

  4. Awwwww your dog is so cute I just got a pitbull boxer mix, well thats what I was told. This kid was giving him away at a store & when I held him he smelt like urine & was sickly looking I begged my husband to let me take him home & of course I got my way!!! The 1st day I had him he puked about 6 times & had water diarrhea!!! he would not eat or drink. He through up corn beans rice & some other stuff so I guess they were just feeding the puppys scraps!!!! I gave him water w/ a dropper & within 24 hrs he was a totally different puppy. When I tell people what kind of dog he is they think im crazy because I have a 5 yr old son. Riley loves him though & they are already best friends I believe its how you raise your dog not the breed, any dog can snap not just pitbulls!!! My sister also has a boxer & she wouldnt hurt a fly!!!
